Advantages of Laminated Glass vs. Tempered Glass

Mar 02,2026

Laminated glass and tempered glass are both categorized as safety glass, but laminated glass boasts distinct advantages in protective performance, operational stability, and functional scalability, as detailed below:

Higher safety after breakage

Tempered glass shatters into small, blunt-edged pieces, which reduces scratch risks but the fragments are prone to falling off, posing a hazard of falling objects at height. Laminated glass, however, has its shards firmly bonded by the intermediate PVB/EVA interlayer. It maintains its overall integrity even when broken and prevents splintering to cause injuries, making it ideal for high-rise building windows, curtain walls, and automotive windshields.

Superior impact resistance and anti-theft performance

The interlayer structure of laminated glass can absorb impact energy. Even if the glass is shattered by external force, the interlayer can still block the penetration of foreign objects, delivering excellent anti-theft results. While tempered glass has high impact strength, it tends to break completely and fail when subjected to strong external forces such as heavy object collisions.

More outstanding sound and heat insulation effects

The intermediate interlayer of laminated glass can effectively block sound wave transmission, lowering noise penetration rates. It can also filter out a portion of ultraviolet and infrared rays, achieving the combined functions of sound insulation, heat insulation, and UV aging resistance. Regular tempered glass lacks such composite properties and requires additional film application to achieve similar effects.

Stronger operational stability

Tempered glass carries a risk of spontaneous breakage, which may occur unexpectedly due to temperature differences or internal impurities. Thanks to the cushioning effect of the interlayer, laminated glass has better thermal stability, with a significantly reduced probability of spontaneous breakage. In addition, local damage does not affect its overall usability, helping cut down maintenance costs.

Huahui laminated glass complies with international and national standards including GB/T 11944, ASTM E2190 and EN1279, and meets custom needs for high-rises, coastal engineering, interior design and more.
