Science Today: The Difference Between Tempered Glass and Ordinary Glass

Glass is one of the most common materials in our daily lives—found in windows, phone screens, coffee tables, and more. But have you ever wondered why some glass breaks easily while other glass shatters in a less dangerous way? Today, let's talk about the differences between tempered glass and ordinary glass.
1. Different Manufacturing Processes
Ordinary glass is made by melting raw materials at high temperatures and then cooling them directly. Its internal structure is relatively loose. Tempered glass, on the other hand, starts as cut ordinary glass that undergoes intense heating followed by rapid, uniform cooling (physical tempering) or chemical treatment (chemical tempering). This process creates compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress inside—like putting a "tight suit" on the glass.
2. Significant Strength Difference
The flexural strength of tempered glass is 3-5 times that of ordinary glass, and its impact strength is 5-10 times higher. A simple experiment: with glass of the same thickness, ordinary glass might break from a thrown stone, while tempered glass can support an adult standing on it without cracking. This is why high-rise building facades and car windows use tempered glass.
3. Completely Different Breaking Patterns
This is the most intuitive difference. When ordinary glass breaks, it forms sharp, large fragments with edges as sharp as knives, which can cause severe injuries. When tempered glass breaks, it instantly turns into numerous small particles about the size of soybeans, with rounded edges that greatly reduce the risk of cuts.
4. Safety Determines Usage
Ordinary glass is mainly used where strength isn't critical, such as picture frames and regular windows. Tempered glass is widely used in places requiring safety assurance: bathroom doors, glass partitions, shopping mall glass doors, car side windows, etc. However, it's worth noting that tempered glass has a small chance of spontaneous breakage (about 0.3% probability), which is one of its minor drawbacks.
5. How to Quickly Tell Them Apart?
A simple method: look at the glass surface through polarized sunglasses—tempered glass will show colored streaks (stress marks), while ordinary glass won't. Additionally, tempered glass has slightly poorer flatness and may have subtle wave-like sensations.
In summary, tempered glass is an "upgraded version" of ordinary glass, excelling in safety. Next time you choose glass products, remember to make your selection based on the usage scenario and safety requirements.
