Characteristics of Tinted Laminated Glass and Its Pros and Cons for Balcony Use

Tinted laminated glass is a safe, functional, and visually appealing building material. Its key feature lies in the PVB interlayer: when broken, glass fragments stay adhered to the film, preventing injury. The PVB layer also effectively blocks coincidence noise (1000–2000 Hz), filters over 99% of UV rays, and absorbs infrared heat—reducing cooling costs and protecting furniture from fading.
These properties make it a valuable choice in modern safety glass applications.
However, caution is advised when using tinted laminated glass in residential spaces like balconies. While colors such as blue, bronze, or tea offer aesthetic appeal and sun shading, they significantly reduce light transmittance—blue glass transmits only about 50% of solar radiation, bronze and tea as low as 25%. In comparison, clear glass with screening allows around 61% transmittance, offering better daylight and ventilation.
Sunlight naturally helps sterilize, deodorize, and purify indoor air. Overuse of low-transmittance tinted glass may weaken these effects, resulting in dim lighting, visual fatigue, and a sense of oppression—negatively impacting well-being.
For healthier living, clear high-transmittance glass is recommended, paired with adjustable shading solutions such as external blinds or indoor curtains. This combination ensures both comfort and natural light. Tinted glass can be used sparingly as an accent, but should not dominate frequently used spaces.
